A Howling Good Time
Save the Date, Sunday, Oct. 27, 4 p.m. for a howling good time at KickStart Kafe, 148 Bridge Street. There will also be a gathering of writing groups, in addition to celebrating the Literacy Council of Northeastern New Mexico (TLC).
“Join us in recognizing an organization that continues its outreach to readers of all ages, primarily children,” said Las Vegas Lit’s David Rogers. “This grant will go to support TLC’s mission of putting books into the hands of children who want to read them.”
TLC executive director Dorothy Maestas said the organization has been awarded grants from other sources in the past for projects at the core of its mission of promoting literacy. One was for its Travelling Book Bag program to establish a bank of developmentally appropriate books to rotate monthly through participating home daycare centers. The second was to support the establishment and expansion of an affiliate of Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, the Imagination Library of San Miguel County, a partnership between the TLC and Northeastern Regional Education Cooperative (NEREC). TLC’s main event is the annual Literacy Fair at which hundreds of new books are given out each year.
If you are in a writing group or would like to form a writing group, there will be a brief discussion time to join or reconnect.
The evening’s Ghoulies Grumble Halloween Open Mic featuring local writers reading their original scary poetry and prose will round out the evening.
The event is free and open to the public. Halloween treats will be served.
“Writers need readers,” Rogers said. “We invite the community to show up to watch the entertainment or become an active part of the entertainment.”
Ghoulies Grumble Halloween Open Mic is sponsored in part by the Las Vegas Arts Council and through the generosity of Jan and Frank Beurskens, and KickStart Kafe.
