Las Vegas Lit invites area poets to participate in a joint project with the Meadow City Camera Club on Saturday, Sept. 21, at 5 p.m., at Gallery 140, 140 Bridge Street, Las Vegas, N.M. This ekphrasis poetry event is free and open to the public. Retired journalist and documentarian Jim Hunyadi will lead the project. Hunyadi has compiled a list of 50 films and television shows that have been filmed in and around Las Vegas, from the early days of film to the present.
Ekphrasis poetry is poetry inspired by art or an image. Poets may bring work they have already written or may choose something from a list provided by Hunyadi, which will become the subject of a poem to be written on the spot at the meeting. Members of the camera club will then each take a poem and photograph what the poem means to them.
During his journalism career, Hunyadi worked on newspapers in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and New York. He also worked as an IT person for 10 years. After retiring in Las Vegas, he pursued a master’s degree in media arts at New Mexico Highlands University and produced documentaries on subject matter ranging from Los Alamos to early childhood education, including a project for the Wheelwright Museum.
Las Vegas Lit is a project of the Las Vegas Arts Council. The organization typically sponsors author or open mic events monthly. For more information about Las Vegas Lit, sign up to receive emails and event notifications.
