In a profile piece written in January 2023, Dr. Lauren Fath is described as a maker of things. She uses her hands to write, knit, sew, and refurbish antique furniture, among other pursuits. Fath creates with her hands to infuse her varied relationships with gifts she makes to demonstrate her friendship and love.
Writing will be the focus of her featured author presentation on Sunday, March 30, 4 p.m., at Gallery 140, located at 140 Bridge Street. Fath will read from and discuss her books My Hands, Remembering: A Memoir, a series of linked essays, and her chapbook of poetry A Landlocked State. She will also conduct a brief generative writing activity. Bring your writing materials and participate in what will be a creativity-inspiring exercise.
Fath’s My Hands, Remembering: A Memoir, published in 2022, was a finalist for the New Mexico/Arizona Book Awards. Her lyric essay chapbook A Landlocked State was published in 2020.
Originally from Fort Wayne, Indiana, she holds a BS in journalism from Northwestern University, an MFA in creative nonfiction from Oregon State University, and a PhD in English and creative writing from the University of Missouri. Her work has appeared in the literary journals CutBank, Fourth Genre, Post Road, and Tahoma Literary Review, among others, and has received Pushcart Prize and Best of the Net nominations. She lives in Las Vegas, N. M., where she is an associate professor of English at New Mexico Highlands University.
Las Vegas Lit, a project of the Las Vegas Arts Council, features local authors and other events to connect readers and writers in a spirit of community. The organization also sponsors free writing groups, open mic events, and occasional workshops.
