Sunday, Feb. 25 beginning at 2:30 p.m., at 148 Bridge Street, the new KickStart Kafe will host a Las Vegas Lit Writers’ Showcase featuring a workshop by indie author Sharon Vander Meer. Is Indie Publishing Right for You? explores the ups and downs of being an indie author. An Open Mic showcasing the talents of local writers of poetry and prose will follow.
Vander Meer has spent much of her career as a freelance writer, reporter, and editor. She has been a storyteller since childhood and finds inspiration in everyday life. She is the indie-published author of four novels, a book of daily reflections, and two chapbooks of poetry.
“What I know about publishing could fit into a thimble,” Vander Meer said. “What I can share with confidence is that self-publishing is accessible to everyone. That doesn’t mean it’s right for everyone. In this workshop, I will be talking about the pitfalls and possibilities. What writing and publishing boils down to is doing the work: the work of writing, the work of finding an agent or publisher, the work of evaluating the realities of indie publishing, and the work of marketing your book.”
Whether you are a writer of fiction or nonfiction, this short Las Vegas Lit workshop will give attendees insight into options for publication.
Las Vegas Lit is under the fiscal sponsorship of the Las Vegas Arts Council. The organization has indie-published Tapestry: Tales, Essays, Poetry, a Collection of Works by Northeastern New Mexico Writers, and Up From the Ashes We Rise. The books may be purchased here on our website, or from Books of the Southwest at Rough Rider Antiques on Lincoln Avenue in Las Vegas, N.M.
