Horizon

By Jerry E. Cornwell

Once you are old your heart collapses

They’ll need to crack your chest

Scraping out fat, debris and hubris

You’ll find a mint and a pillow

to squeeze when you laugh

a poem to yourself

regretting everything.

You should know a cardinal landing

Is lighter than your heart

but his song weighs the same as your breath

That is why his voice comforts us.

Nothing is as blue as a bluebird

The sky attempts and fails

Nothing stands in the wind

Against the sun

No flower can ruffle on its branch

And fly away stitching the air

we cannot fly

and yet momentarily we will.
