New Book - What’s This? by Amy Hufnal

Las Vegas Lit will host a presentation by Amy Hufnal, educator, world traveler, and author of eight children’s books on Sunday, Aug. 25, at 4 p.m. at Kickstart Café, 148 Bridge Street, Las Vegas, NM. The event is free and the public is invited to attend.

Hufnal recently returned from her twentieth trip to Kenya since 1987 as a volunteer science teacher.  Since 1994, she has been working with the Girls Safe House in Narok, Kenya, and is now a member of the board for the safe house. The purpose of the Safe House is to rescue and educate badly abused girls. To date, 1,000 girls have been rescued.

The proceeds from all eight of Hufnal’s books goes to support the Safe House. She is now working on a ninth book, a mystery written for junior high and high school students. Hufnal started writing at the age of 30. In addition to writing and illustrating children’s books, she writes plays, some of which have been performed by the theatre students at Robertson. The multi-talented Hufnal also designs and makes costumes and sets for the plays she directs.

This is Hufnal’s seventh year teaching world cultures, theater, and choir at Robertson High School. Previously, Hufnal taught for 39 years in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She also taught as a volunteer teacher in Costa Rica, Peru and Kenya.

Her favorite art medium to work with is colored pencils.
